A data recording device comprising a controlling means for switching the pulse duty of a recording pulse in accordance with the temperature of a recording medium and/or the vicinity thereof is disclosed. The pulse duty is lowered according to the temperature to the extent that the power of a laser diode does not exceed its rated value. Namely, the pulse duty of the recording pulse is switched in stages so that the pulse duty is lowered, thereby preventing deterioration of recording characteristics when the temperature is high and so that the pulse duty is heightened so as to have the peak power of the laser diode equal to or lower than the maximum rated value when the temperature is low.
