PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration of image quality by compression encoding an image while dividing into a plurality of areas when it is required, and compression encoding the image without dividing it into a plurality of areas when it is not required thereby preventing distortion at the boundary of areas.

SOLUTION: Since a digital copy machine judges the size of a sheet in each sheet tray and the size and orientation of a sheet in each sheet tray are known previously, a decision is made whether a sheet having the size and orientation suitable for image data being imaged exists or not (step S2). If it exists (Y at step S2), the image data is compression encoded without being divided into a plurality of tiles (step S3). When a sheet having a size suitable for the image data being imaged exists but the orientation is not suitable (Y at step S5), the image data is divided into a plurality of tiles and each tile is compression encoded independently (step S6) and the orientation of an image can be rotated according to the orientation of the sheet.
