PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the S/N ratio of a sensor signal in a low illumination area, and to improve the digital resolution, when the sensor signal is converted into a digital signal, after amplified in each pixel of the image sensor. SOLUTION: The sensor signal outputted from each pixel is amplified by using a pair of amplifiers which have respective amplification gains different from each other, and each of the amplified signals is converted into a digital signal by each dedicated A/D converter. As long as the digital signal, having a larger amplification gain, is within the effective area of the A/D converter, the digital signal having the larger amplification gain is selected and outputted; but when the digital signal is beyond the effective area, the digital signal having a smaller amplification gain is selected and outputted.
