PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of detecting whether or not any dust exists on contact glass and complementing read data with those of adjacent pixels when the dust exists, thereby eliminating a stripe image due to the dust. SOLUTION: Prior to reading a sheet original, a scanner lamp 15 is lighted to read a background board 102. When any dust exists in a middle part of read data A, a level of the read data is outputted smaller. An absolute value of (A-B) is calculated in this case, wherein B is read data stored in a comparison data NV-RAM 205. An image processing section 208 calculates an average of adjacent pixel data of complemental object pixels according to expression 1 of ä(complemental object start pixel data-first pixel data)+ (complemental object start pixel data + first pixel data)}÷2, the complemental object pixels being three pixel data in the middle greater than a comparison coefficient C, selected to be 10 in this case, and the object pixel is complemented according to the calculated value as above.
