PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a mis-operation prevention mechanism of a shift lever by a simple structure in a gate device having staggered gate grooves. SOLUTION: This gate device for a shift lever comprises the shift lever 2 for shifting operation to shift positions of D, N, R and P in a transmission, a gate plate 1 having the staggered gate grooves 15 in which the shift lever 2 is inserted for movement, and a case 5 holding the gate plate 1 and storing the shift lever 2. The gate plate 1 is generally formed integrally of a specified plastic material so as to have a specified thickness. The staggered grooves 15 bent in two shift and select directions of the shift lever 2 perpendicular to each other are formed in the gate plate 1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
