PURPOSE: A linear power amplifier for use in a mobile communication system and a method for amplifying a linear power are provided to find the optimum value of attenuator with preventing the flickering of the output of the amplifier. CONSTITUTION: A linear power amplifier for use in a mobile communication system includes the steps of: setting(600) an initial attenuation amount or phase change amount X as the function f(X) corresponding the X; comparing(610) the function value f(X+a) with the f(X)-Y; gradually increasing(615) the variable X by a if the f(X+a) is small from the comparison result; comparing(620) the f(X)+Y with the f(X+a) if the f(X+a) is larger from the comparison result; gradually decreasing(645) the variable X by a if the function value f(X+a) is larger than the f(X)+Y; and maintaining the attenuation amount or the phase change amount with X if the f(X+a) exists between the f(X)-Y and the f(X)+Y and stores each of the function values on a predetermined memory at each process.
