PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which eliminates the soiling of a transfer material by suppressing the soiling of the guide member of the transfer material with toner. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a plurality of developing means to form a toner image; an image carrier to carry the toner image; a transfer means attachable/detachable to/from the image carrier and to transfer the toner image on the image carrier to the transfer material; and the guide member of the transfer material to guide the transfer material to a contact part formed by the transfer means and the image carrier. After the image carrier passes the vicinity of the transfer means separated in the state of carrying the toner image, the transfer means abuts on the image carrier to transfer the toner image to the transfer material. The distance between the guide member of the transfer material and the image carrier when the transfer means is separated from the image carrier is larger than that when the transfer means abuts on the image carrier.
