PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of improving the productivity of the apparatus and reducing the power consumption. SOLUTION: In the image reading apparatus wherein a luminous flux from a read optical system including a light source 2 lights up image information on an original face and an image forming means 7 is used to form an image of the image information on a read means 8, and the read means 8 reads the image, the image reading apparatus has a press board original read mode wherein the read optical system is scanned to read the image information in the subscanning direction while the image information comes to a standstill and an original skimming through mode wherein the image information is scanned and read in the subscanning direction while the read optical system comes to a standstill. The image reading apparatus is provided with an increased reflection member 13 for reflecting the luminous flux emitted to the opposite side to the original face to the original face in the luminous flux from the light source and a heat dissipation means 14 for externally dissipating heat generated from the light source, the increased reflection member 13 and the heat dissipation means 14 being integrally provided and used in the original skimming through mode.
