PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating device for safely heating a beverage-containing can even if a vacant can is put in, and also provide a method for controlling the heating device. SOLUTION: A detection means which detects a temperature on the surface of the beverage-containing can is provided, and the content of the beverage-containing can is determined from the difference between a temperature on the surface of the beverage-containing can which is not yet heated and a temperature on the surface of the beverage-containing can which has been heated with a minimum output. When the content is determined to be short, the heating is stopped, and accordingly the safe heating can be carried out.
