<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device constituted so that the life of a contact is prolonged by reducing the number of times of power supply/power interruption by an interrupting means and so that an expensive interrupting means is unnecessary, and to provide an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In the fixing device, a fixation nip part N is formed by bringing a pair of fixing bodies in contact with each other, and a recording material P carrying an unfixed image is transported and heated through the fixation nip part N so as to fix the image to the recording material P. The fixing device is provided with a heater 20 for heating the fixation nip part N, a thermistor 21, a CPU 23, a temperature control part 27 and a relay 31. When the fixing bodies are rotated backward, a temperature control time for controlling the temperature after stopping the fixing bodies is decided by the CPU 23 in accordance with the temperature detected by the thermistor 21 while stopping the power supply to the heater 21.
