PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which prevents reduction of the image quality by detecting dust and foreign matters on a contact glass with a simple constitution. SOLUTION: An image reader 10 has an original carrying mechanism 17, a vertically long contact glass 16, an exposure lamp mounting unit 11, a reflection mirror mounting unit 12, and a light receiving unit 14 provided in the imaging position of an optical system 13. At the time of standby, the exposure lamp mounting unit 11 or the reflection mirror mounting unit 12 waits in a standby position below the contact glass 16. A colored plane part 18a covering a part superposed on the read line 16a of the contact glass 16, from below is provided to the exposure lamp mounting unit or the reflection mirror mounting unit being in the standby position. When the contact glass 16 is seen from above before image read, dust or dirt can be easily found because of the colored plane part. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
