PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having high characteristics to hold information. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element comprises a pair of substrates 1 and 2 which are arranged to face each other and have electrodes 3 and 4 on their opposite surfaces and at least one of which is transparent, and a liquid crystal layer 8 which is held between a pair of the substrates 1 and 2 and contains a liquid crystal material having dichromatic dyes 6 and ion trapping matter 9.
