PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology having both low fuel consumption performance by a variable cylinder system, low fuel consumption performance by economy running control and low emission performance, and smoothly restarting an internal combustion engine without lengthily continuing unpleasant vibration by early stopping the internal combustion engine when automatically stopping the internal combustion engine by the economy running control. SOLUTION: This variable cylinder system has the internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, a cylinder number control means for operating a residual cylinder by resting a partial cylinder by cutting off fuel supply to the partial cylinder according to an operation condition of the internal combustion engine and a pump loss increasing means for increasing a pump loss of at least the partial cylinder of the plurality of cylinders when stopping the internal combustion engine in cylinder cut-off operation for resting the partial cylinder by the cylinder number control means.
