The fuel injection device (20) injects fuel in two directions via an injection opening with a flow characteristic such that the peak flow speed lies on a line between two defined points and decreases with increasing distance from the position of the peak value on the line if the boundary of the fuel cloud (FA,FB) is close to the central axis of the injection opening. The line joins the centers of the two fuel clouds moving in the two directions.
