<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device by which sufficient screen brightness can be immediately obtained and further brightness of a display panel can be prevented from sensitively reacting to surrounding illumination intensity even when it moves from a dark place to a bright place, for example. <P>SOLUTION: The display device is provided with a liquid crystal display panel 9, a photodetecting means 11 which detects incident light of a display surface side of the liquid crystal display panel 9 and converts it to electric signal output, a sampling means which integrates or averages output of the photodetecting means 11 for every prescribed sampling time, a sampling time controlling means which controls the prescribed sampling time based on variation of output from the sampling means and a brightness controlling means which controls brightness of the liquid crystal display panel 9 based on the output from the sampling means. The display device can be suitably applied to a transmission type liquid crystal display panel or an electroluminescence panel. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
