PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber which satisfies transmission characteristics used by a metro network as an optical fiber which is applicable to both a wavelength-division multiplex system and a low-density wavelength-division multiplex system. SOLUTION: The optical fiber has a refractive index profile including a core area which extends along the length and a clad area formed at the outer periphery of the core area. The radius and refractive index profiles of the core area and clad area are so selected that the optical fiber has zero dispersion wavelength in a range of 1,300 to 1,350 nm, a dispersion value in a range of 13 to 18 ps/nm×km at a wavelength of 1,550 nm, a zero dispersion gradient in a range of 0.046 to 0.079 ps/nm<SP>2</SP>×km, and an effective cross section of≥70μm2.
