<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drastically improve modulation efficiency of an optical modulator by improving a propagation speed of a modulation signal and thereby reducing a difference in the propagation speeds between those of an optical wave to be modulated and a modulation signal wave. <P>SOLUTION: The optical modulator is equipped with a substrate 1, an optical waveguide 2 supported on the substrate 1, first and second conductive lines to apply a modulation electric field to at least a part of the optical waveguide 2, a dielectric layer 4 disposed on the substrate 1 so as to cover the first and second conductive lines 3a, 3b and an electrode 5 placed opposite to first and second conductive lines 3a, 3b via the dielectric layer 4. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
