PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable optical attenuator which is small-sized and inexpensive more than the conventional one. SOLUTION: The variable optical attenuator is composed of input and output optical systems 2, 3, a double refractive member 4 disposed on the output side of the input and output optical systems 2, 3, a liquid crystal member 5 which can separately change the polarized states of the respective input light emitted from the double refractive member 4 and a reflective member 6 which reflects the light passing through the liquid crystal member 5 and returns the light to the output lens 3b of the input and output optical systems 2, 3 through the liquid crystal member 5 and the double refractive member 4.
