Continuous casting of liquid metals, especially liquid steel, comprises partially reducing the heat transfer number alpha (W/m2>.K) during cooling in the region of the heat flow shadow of the submerged nozzle (1) so that an isotherm lying in a horizontal plane produces a uniform strand shell on the periphery (20). An independent claim is also included for a device for the continuous casting of liquid metals, especially liquid steel, comprising a mold (2) and a submerged nozzle (1) which can be adjusted below a constant casting mirror and reaches up to the funnel end between copper plates (2a).
