To estimate the fuel/air ratio used by an internal combustion motor, with exhaust gas recirculation, the richness of the fuel mixture in a cylinder is estimated to give the total oxygen drawn into the motor. The oxygen content of the exhaust gas, oxygen intake into the motor and the air/fuel ratio are measured to give the fuel/air ratio in the stoichiometric conditions of the combustion equation. To estimate the fuel/air ratio used by an internal combustion motor, with exhaust gas recirculation, the richness of the fuel mixture in a cylinder is estimated to give the total oxygen drawn into the motor. The oxygen content of the exhaust gas, the oxygen intake into the motor and the air/fuel ratio are measured and their values are registered to give the fuel/air ratio in the stoichiometric conditions of the combustion equation. A proportional sensor (32) measures the exhaust gas oxygen content in the exhaust circuit. A computer (36) is programmed to determine the fuel/air richness, to act on the motor control (34), which is linked to the fuel injectors (38) at the motor (10). The computer also takes in the air pressure and temperature readings at the exhaust intake (20) from the turbo compressor (16).
