Sensor and method for determining the absolute steering angle of a steering wheel

Steering angle sensor has an evaluation unit (25) for calculating an absolute steering angle (omega ) by evaluation of the output signals of sensors (21, 23) that measure the rotation of a steering wheel by monitoring the rotation of a sampling unit (9) with respect to the angular position of the angular position (psi ) of the steering wheel within a single full rotation of the wheel. The evaluation unit is also used for monitoring the precise angular position of a counter wheel (13) within a single rotation and use of this for calculating the absolute steering angle. Independent claims are also included for the following; (a) a method for determining the absolute steering angle of a steering wheel; (b) an evaluation unit for a steering angle sensor.
