In order to facilitate access to and descent from a vehicle, such as a motor vehicle, a retractable step (10) is provided which can be moved, by virtue of a driving mechanism with rotatable levers (15, 16, 23), controlled by an actuator device (14) such as an electric geared motor (25), between a retracted position, in which the step (10) is arranged in a substantially vertical position beneath a respective door (12) of the vehicle, with an outer surface (10a) thereof flush with that of the door, and an extended position in which the step (10) is rotated and translated outwardly of the vehicle, so as to provide a large tread surface projecting laterally from the vehicle. <IMAGE>
