The self-cleaning chuck for wood turning lathes incorporates a stainless steel plunger that fits into the center of the wood turning chuck, sealed with a rubber "O"ring. The inside and center of the plunge is flat bottomed drilled to support a stainless steel spring , approximately 3/4 inch outside diameter and 2 inches long. The other end of the spying sits in the spindle, which is flat bottomed drilled to hold the spring. The spring is the heart of the unit as it forces the piston outwards after being compressed end forces unwanted wood out of the chuck, leaving the chuck clean and ready for another piece of peeler log. To prevent the plunger from travelling too far it has a 1/8 inch wide shoulder, used as a stopper. The spring is selected, by experiment by the user, to be strong enough to push wood debris of different hardness.
