Selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated compounds (I) contained in a hydrocarbon charge (A), using a catalytic reactor with a hydrogen-selective membrane, involves: (a) introducing a mixture of (A) and H2 into at least one reaction zone of the reactor; (b) contacting at least part of the H2 necessary for reaction with the upstream, porous, inorganic face of the membrane; and (c) catalytically reacting the charge from (a) with at least part of the H2 selectively crossing the membrane.
