A stereoscopic display apparatus includes a source of illumination for emitting light, an imaging system for imaging the source of illumination at a viewing region, a spatial light modulator for modulating light from the source of illumination with two-dimensional images, and a control unit for controlling a relative position of the "active" source of illumination related to the imaging system. The stereoscopic display apparatus further includes a controller to vary the relative position of the "active" source of illumination in three directions which are orthogonal to each other, without physically moving a light source for inducing the source of illumination to emit light.
