PURPOSE: A device and a method for managing power on a portable computing device having a network interface module are provided to save the power from a limited energy source with operation of a power-saving mode if the portable computing device receives the power from the limited power source such as a battery or a fuel cell and is connected to an access point. CONSTITUTION: The portable computing device(100) includes the network interface module(201) and the network interface module includes a transmitter(122) wirelessly transmitting data through an antenna(206). A network driver(203) controls the operation of the network interface module and communicates with a power management module(202). The power management module determines a power state of the network interface module by communicating with a scanning engine(204), an application(206), a power indicator(208), a power setting device(210), a packet analyzer(212), and a statistics analyzer(214). The scanning module requests the network interface module to enter a high power state when the network interface module needs scanning.
