PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sampling pulse generating apparatus adopting a circuit configuration wherein a very small delay means capable of providing a very small delay and a positive / negative sampling pulse supply means are integrated. SOLUTION: An SRD generates steep positive and negative impulses with different polarity, a prescribed pulse width generating means respectively propagates the positive step pulse and the negative step pulse caused across the SRD as traveling waves, and generates a sampling pulse with a prescribed pulse width on the basis of a composite waveform between the propagated wave and a reflected wave that is a reflected and returned traveling wave. A current direction switching means receives a reference clock for sampling externally and inverts the direction of the current flowing through the SRD corresponding to the reference clock, and a forward current amount variable means externally controls the current amount of the forward direction current IF flowing through the SRD variably, and a reverse direction current amount variable means externally controls the current amount of the reverse current IR flowing through the SRD variably.
