PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position adjustment apparatus for an optical modulator and a position adjustment method for the optical modulator capable of controlling a position of the optical modulator to perform optimum focus adjustment. SOLUTION: A focus position is positioned in a liquid crystal panel fitting step of a liquid crystal projector, a cross-shaped pattern is projected on the liquid crystal panel, every time the panel is moved in a direction of the Z axis, a video signal of a pattern image is read. The luminance of the pattern image is scanned in directions of the X and Y axes, and the position of the panel in the direction of the Z axis is obtained when contrast values B<SB>X</SB>, B<SB>Y</SB>are respectively maximized.
