OPTICAL FIBER, DISPERSION COMPENSATOR, AND OPTICAL TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact dispersion compensator and an optical transmission system.

SOLUTION: The dispersion compensator (M) comprises a housing (1) and an optical fiber coil (11). The optical fiber coil (11) has a coiled part (11a)constituted by a dispersion-compensating optical fiber wound like a coil shape while being in a bundled shape with its winding distortion substantially eliminated. The housing (1) is filled with a resin (21) surrounding the coiled part (11a) of the optical fiber coil (11), whereas the coiled part (11a) is held by the resin. By this structure, the dispersion compensator (M) realizes an accumulated chromatic dispersion of -1,200 ps/nmat or more but less than -600 ps/nmat at a wavelength of 1.55 μm while the volume of the housing (1) is suppressed to 500 cm3or less.
