PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ballpoint pen ink composition which mainly comprises water and exhibits good characteristics at the beginning of writing even after long-term storage. SOLUTION: The ballpoint pen ink composition comprises water, a pigment, an organic solvent, and a thickener, the content of the pigment being 15-40 wt%. The thickener comprises an associative block polymer and a humectant. The liquid viscosity of the composition at 20°C at a shear rate of 500 s<SP>-1</SP>is 500-10,000 mPas.
