PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of more uniformly securing contact between an original and an original platen. SOLUTION: A sponge press-contact body 8 whose upper and lower positions can be adjusted by an adjustment mechanism 9 is provided between the cover of the original cover 4 and the pressing sponge of the image reader. If a void C2 is formed because the original 10 is not brought into contact with an original placing part 2 by the resiliency F2 of the sponge 6 caused by a crease 10a or the like when the original 10 is placed on the placing part 2 and the cover 4 is closed, the adjustment mechanism 9 of the press-contact body 8 nearby is adjusted to increase pressure applied to the sponge 6 by the press-contact body 8, whereby the resiliency of the sponge 6 is increased, and the void C2 is eliminated, the original 10 is more flattened and is brought into contact with the placing part 2.
