PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer in which a decision is made through a simple arrangement whether the height of the ink head in an ink cartridge from the surface of a sheet is altered correctly by an operating lever depending on the thickness of the sheet. SOLUTION: A stopper 7c is provided on the base body 7a of an operating lever 7 for moving an ink carriage 1 mounting an ink cartridge 3 selectively between a lower position corresponding to a plain paper and an upper position corresponding to a cardboard. Using a residual quantity of ink sensor 41 for detecting the reference position G of the ink carriage based on abutting or non-abutting of a protrusion 1c on the ink carriage against the stopper, the lower position or the upper position is judged based on the distance L1, L2 from the reference position to a position where the protrusion abuts against the stopper or one wall face of the ink jet printer body 51. Image processing is carried out only if the thickness of a sheet having conditions set when image formation is requested from a host, and the height of the ink head from the surface of a sheet altered depending on the thickness of the sheet are appropriate.
