PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for checking a hollow fiber membrane module for defects, whereby a leak in the module can be checked in a short time with a high accuracy. SOLUTION: The method comprises the steps of passing a gas through the hollow fiber membrane module 10 prior to the counting of the number of particulates, passing a gas containing the particulates through the hollow fiber membrane module 10, and counting the number of the particulates passing through the membrane by means of a particulate counter 32 equipped with a laser source. The apparatus has a gas collection holder 31 that collects the gas flowing out of the end 18 of the hollow fiber membrane module 10, the particulate counter 32 that counts the number of the particulates in the gas, and an air communication passage 34 that connects the holder 31 with the counter 32.
