PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium, in which a large capacity rewriting operation satisfying the performance, reliability and cost is allowed and the fine magnetic performance is attained while the film strength is high and the sufficient running durability is obtained. SOLUTION: This medium has a feature that a hardness control layer and a magnetic layer consisting of a ferromagnetic metal alloy containing at least cobalt, platinum and chrome and of a nonmagnetic material are provided in this order at least on one surface of a nonmagnetic support, and the hardness control layer consists of a carbon film deposited by a CVD method. A 1st protective layer and a 2nd protective layer are arranged preferably in this order on the magnetic layer, then the 1st protective layer preferably consists of a carbon film deposited by a DC sputter method and the 2nd protective layer preferably consists of the carbon film deposited by the CVD method, and when the hardness of the hardness control layer, 1st protective layer and 2nd protective layer are respectively expressed as S0, S1, S2, it is preferable that equations S1<S0, S1<S2 are satisfied.
