<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nitrile hydratase having improved heat resistance, and to provide a gene encoding the same. <P>SOLUTION: This protein comprises a specific amino acid sequence in which one or more amino acid residues are deleted, replaced or added, and which has a nitrile hydratase activity. The protein is concretely a protein whose enzyme heat resistance is improved by replacing at least one amino acid residue by the residue of an amino acid selected from the group consisting of natural amino acids in the amino acid sequence of nitrile hydratase originated from Rhodococcus rhodochrous J-1 strain.
