PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a user authentication system not illegally used even if leaving it in a using state, without requiring operation for authentication every time a user uses it, and to provide a user authentication apparatus, function provision apparatus, a user authentication method and a function provision method. SOLUTION: A cryptographic key uniquely deciding a user is set in the function provision apparatus 11, and an inquiry sentence authenticating the user on the basis of the cryptographic key is transmitted to the wristwatch type user authentication apparatus 1. The user inputs the cryptographic key uniquely deciding the user, and transmits a response sentence produced on the basis of the cryptographic key to the function provision apparatus 11. The function provision apparatus 11 compares a cryptographic sentence produced on the basis of the the cryptographic key and the inquiry sentence with the response sentence. Only when the two sentences coincide, the function provision apparatus 11 completes an authentication process, and provides a function.
