PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially reduce overhead due to switching of context, in an application such as a real time OS in which switching of the context occurs frequently. SOLUTION: An OS issues a Swap instruction to start up a context switch. The swap instruction is issued to a thread control unit 9 together with a thread ID to be replaced. The thread ID is used to uniquely identify a thread stored in a context cache 8. The thread control unit 9, through a context dedicated bus 12, saves data from a register file 1 to the context cache 8, and at the same time sends data of a new thread from the context cache 8 to the register file 1. The thread control unit 9, on the basis of the sent thread ID, automatically replaces data in the register file 1 with data of necessary volume in the context cache 8. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
