PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent 'passing-through of injected fuel' in which fuel injected into a cylinder reaches an exhaust port before closing an exhaust valve and exhausted to an exhaust pipe. SOLUTION: When base fuel injection start timing calculated on the basis of an engine operating state is advanced more than the exhaust valve closing timing by a prescribed value D2 (time until injected fuel reaches the exhaust port) or more, the device judges that there is a possibility of passing-through of injected fuel and calculates lag correction amount in accordance with a difference between the base fuel injection start timing and the exhaust valve closing timing. The base fuel injection start timing is lag-corrected by the lag correction amount so that the final fuel injection start timing is set. Even during advancement of the exhaust valve timing and the fuel injection start timing, the relationship between the exhaust valve timing and the fuel injection start timing can be controlled so as to maintain the state in which the closing timing of the exhaust valve is introduced before injected fuel reaches the exhaust port.
