The device (1) has outwardly open peripheral grooves (6a-6f) of variable depth (t1-t6) for accommodating electric motor windings. The grooves are separated into at least two groups (4a-4d) of equal or at least approximately equal cross-section. Preferably all grooves of a group are different from each other in their depths. All grooves of a group can be of similar shape. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a wound rotor or stator (b) and a method of winding a rotor or stator.
