An electric vacuum cleaner (1) has a filter chamber (3) and a retainer for an inserted filter bag (4) having a retaining plate (32). The retainer consists of a spring arm (26) working together with the retaining plate of the filter bag in shape-locking fashion. The spring arm has a fastening end (28) and a retaining end (30). The fastening end is aligned to the floor of the filter chamber whilst the retaining end is aligned to the opening cross-section of the filter chamber. The spring arm is pre-tensioned to the inside of the filter chamber. The spring arm with the inserted filter bag is deflected against the pre-tension to the filter chamber wall.
