<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer enabling a user to correctly discriminate a state of a toner cartridge. <P>SOLUTION: This printer discriminates whether or not each toner cartridge is short of toner but is in the state of allowing printing; whether or not printing is not allowed due to fatigue of the cartridge; and whether or not the printer is in the state without any problem (steps S102, S102); and which outputs (steps S104, S110) information of the contents in accordance with a result of the discrimination.
