PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which performs actual scanning without degradation of a read quality immediately after user's request for execution of scanning. SOLUTION: When shading and AF processing to read a white reference plate are executed, difference values from preceding shading and AF processing are acquired, and a timer value T being the time to next shading and AF processing is set in accordance with the difference values and a reference table. According as difference values are larger, a smaller value is given as the timer value T. When scanning is indicated by the user, actual scanning is immediately executed on the basis of results of the just preceding shading and AF processing. Thus the waiting time for actual scanning after the indication of scanning is reduced so that a document can be read while more reflecting the latest state of a device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
