摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensator which increases the contrast of a projection liquid crystal device and hardly generate color unevenness of black display despite of long-period use to realize high display quality and to apply it to the projection liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensator 20 is constituted by laminating a transparent film 21 which has a photoelastic coefficient of &le;7&times;10<SP>-13</SP>cm<SP>2</SP>/dyne and has an antireflective layer 27 formed on its surface, an optical compensating film 30 formed by coating a base material film 31 with a liquid crystal compound layer 32, and a transparent glass plate 23 with the antireflective layer 27 of the transparent film most outside. Two optical compensating films 30 and 40 may be laminated and in this case, they are arranged having their alignment axes almost at right angles and laminated so that surfaces of base material films 31 and 41 on the opposite sides from surfaces coated with liquid crystal compounds are put one over the other.
