PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate the use of a cassette and whether the cassette is new, based on read data from a cassette with memory. SOLUTION: A memory provided in the cassette with memory comprises an EEPROM and a flash memory. Moreover, the data of memories APM, BCID, and a predetermined address are set to a value fixed in advance. Further, terminals 64a, 64b, 64c of the cassette with memory 61 are connected to terminals 65a, 65b, 65c on a VCR side. Voltage levels of the cassette with memory are detected via these terminals at level detecting sections 70a, 70b, 70c.
