<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an automobile capable of retarding the propagation of clogging etc. of an emission control element to the utmost. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device for the automobile is structured so that the emission control element furnished with a filtrating material 6 etc. is accommodated in a body 1 and atomizing nozzles 10 mounted at the forefront of an exhaust gas pipe 8 and the forefront of a branch pipe 9 branching from the exhaust gas pipe 8 are installed upstream of the emission control element. A part on the way of the branch pipe 9 is put in communication with a washing water tank 11. When an accelerator pedal is stamped for starting the automobile etc., a selector valve 13 rotates right downward to open the branch pipe 9. The exhaust gas having flowed into the pipe 9 advances while it draws in the washing water from the tank 11, and the washing water is atomized from the nozzles 10 to purify the exhaust gas.
