PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of reading an image with high quality by eliminating dust or dirt or the like deposited on an ADF original glass pane being a reflected light path of an optical system during original carrying without causing longitudinal stripes in the read image. SOLUTION: Provided is the image reader adopting a sheet through method wherein an original moved on an original glass pane 41 at a constant speed by an automatic document feeder is read by a carriage 50 at a lower fixed position, includes a cleaning member 61 for automatically removing a foreign material on the original glass pane 41.
