PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a metal wire rod for producing a molten metal as to form a stable arc when used for welding or thermal spraying. SOLUTION: The metal wire rod 301 for producing the molten metal shall produce the molten metal containing any of Fe, Al, Mg, Ni, Co, Be, Ta and Ni-Ti as main components, when sequentially heated and melted from a tip side. The metal wire rod has a part including at least the surface of the wire rod, which is constituted by any metal of Fe, Al, Mg, Ni, Co, Be, Ta and Ni-Ti as a main component; and an oxygen-concentrated layer containing a higher concentration of oxygen than that in an inner layer part, which is formed on the surface layer part including the surface of the wire rod, so as to include a protective oxide layer obtained by positive oxidation for the surface of the metal.
