PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a derivatized copolymer containing aspartic acid units and succinimide units, and to provide a method for producing the copolymer. SOLUTION: The method for producing a derivative of a copolymer containing copolymerized aspartate units and succinimide units comprises a step for heating a comonomer mixture of aspartic acid with aspartates to polymerize to form the copolymer, wherein the comonomer mixture is produced by drying a solution of an aspartate having cations non-volatilized in drying and an aspartate having cations volatilized at least a part thereof into free aspartic acid in drying, and a step for derivatization of the copolymer by reacting at least one succinimide unit of the copolymer with an amino-containing compound, an OH-containing compound or another nucleophilic group-containing compound, wherein the derivatization is performed in an aqueous solution, an organic solvent or a mixture thereof.
