PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a solid-state image pickup device which reduces luminance shading and color slurring. SOLUTION: In step S100, the zoom position Z of an imaging lens 14 in imaging is determined. When the zoom position Z is within the range of positions Z1 to Z2 (Z1<Z<Z2), color difference gain processing "2" in step S102 is selected. When the zoom position Z is not greater than the position Z1, the processing proceeds to step S104, and when the zoom position Z is equal to or greater than the position Z2, the processing proceeds to a step S106. In step S104, divided brightness measurement data A in a divided brightness measurement block A are referred to, and in step S106, divided brightness measurement data B in a block B are referred to. Then whether the divided brightness measurement data A and B exceed a prescribed threshold TH is determined. When the data A and B exceed the prescribed threshold TH, the color difference gain processing "2" is selected, and when the data A and B are not higher than the prescribed threshold TH, color difference gain processing "1" is selected.
