PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an area-multilevel image forming method for obtaining a proof image which is used for confirming finished printed matter beforehand, in which both of skin color and neutral gray are reproduced and which has excellent color reproducibility as a visual image by setting the color tones of Y, M, C and other colors independently, namely, by adjusting each of the color tones of the colors other than Y, M and C to dot% to 100% by using the values obtained by measuring the colors of the CIELAB color space of the objective printed matter. SOLUTION: Each of the color tones of the colors other than Y, M and C in the proof image is adjusted to dot% to 100% according to the corresponding relations among the a* values of the CIELAB color space of the proof image and the L* values and the a* values of the objective printed matter.
